Centre asked to block 132 websites: Andhra Pradesh gambling
Casino & Poker websites and apps in AP flee as block is closing in
Two months ago, the Council of Ministers in Andhra Pradesh decided to ban online gambling.
This means that lawmakers amended the original Gambling Act of 1974 to specifically include online gambling. This makes organizers risk 12-month imprisonment for first-time offenses. And players risk 6 months jail-time.
Now, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh has submitted a list of 132 websites and apps that they believe should be blocked. This as they are deemed to be offering gambling services online.
Several popular sites amongst those mentioned in the list
Paytm First Game, Mobile Premier League, and Adda52 are just a few of the listed websites or apps mentioned on the list.
Interestingly, the list does not include Dream11, the main IPL sponsor.
Officials have sent the request to The Centre, urging them to issue a state-wide block of all these sites and apps for all internet providers.
The amended law motivates this block, as it could punish internet providers for failing to block gambling sites, considering access facilitation as assisting illegal activities.
Poker sites already backing out from AP
PokerStars.IN, Adda52, Spartan Poker, and PokerBaazi have already left Andhra Pradesh. They have restricted their services to players in the location.
A spokesperson from PokerStars.IN commented that “We have added Andhra Pradesh to the list of the restricted regions.” They have sent out official communication to the players.
